PART 1: THE DWELLING

Located above 7-Eleven at  8b Canton Street, the dwelling is inspired by the wandering experiences of two girls, Ada and Kelly who were deeply impacted by their stay in Glasgow. The theme wandering to dwelling then contributes to interior design by questioning the stereotypical functions of interior spaces by truly designing according to the inhabitant’s experiences beyond the confines of the space.

The design boasts of a large living room with an unconventional kitchen which includes a sit down hotpot experience due to both their schedules which leads them to often consume instant food. With this being said, there is no need for a standard kitchen.

A tea area was also designed due to the wandering experience in Glasgow where they developed a passion for tea when they visited a Tchai Ovna Tea House as seen from the thumbnails.

First Storey - The Bathroom

Upon wandering to St. Andrew’s Cathedral, the bathroom was designed in a way to facilitate reflection and pondering by including a prayer area as well as a shelf for scripture to encourage the meditation of the psalms. Meditation and prayer are acts that allow the inhabitant to truly dwell.

Based on Vlad Glăveanu’s ‘The function of ornaments: A cultural psychological exploration’, ornaments are essential in condensing our wandering experiences as it help us to identify, remind or communicate. Hence, the materials chosen are those that are reflected in the cathedral. Such as concrete, wood, black and white marble tiles.

Second Storey - Bedroom

When wandering through the magazine Apartmento issue #24, it was realised that a house, is a collection of all things and experiences. It proved true in the bedroom of Kelly as well, where  many items and clothes were collected as a result from travelling and thrifting.

Furthermore, an aspect of wandering is also to observe. Hence, a table was designed at the window. This also tallies with the experience in Blythswood Accommodation where the favourite past time of the girls were looking out of the window and journalling.

Ada was inspired by wandering through a Youtube video 'Japan’s tiny homes' where a young couple bathed under the sunlight. She also loved how the layout of the couple’s tiny home was open. There is also a ladder incorporated for Ada to climb up to the roof and wander at the scenery of the Singapore River. There is also an opening on the wall beside her bed. This is to allow both Ada and Kelly to interact whilst still having the privacy of their own rooms.

Ideation Collage

This sectional collage was an attempt to consolidate the Glasgow experience and transfer them into a dwelling.

Map of Blythswood Accommodation

A mapping exercise was done to understand how Ada and Kelly both inhabited their apartment in Glasgow. Their habits cultivated from this wandering experience is then translated to their dwelling back in Singapore.
